8 Pillars of Self-Esteem Part 7 – Humility

Humility is something that all martial artists must learn on their journey to succeed at becoming a black belt. We learn very quickly that you cannot be the best 100% of the time.  There will be days where you will drop a weapon, miss the target, lose a sparring match, or even no-change at a belt testing.  Our second Grand Master, Soon Ho Lee, said it in his saying etched in stone at ATA Headquarters “there is always more to learn.”

2bf9e368acd974a33145eb361d84ddf9But don’t confuse this with false humility, or putting yourself down.  Ken Blanchard said, “Humility does not mean you think less of yourself, it means you think of yourself less.”  When you learn self-awareness and learn what areas you need to improve on, martial artists have the humility to accept the correction and work hard to improve that area.
