8 Pillars of Self-Esteem Part 8 – Forgiveness

forgive-others-1024x1024The final pillar of self-esteem is one that many people struggle with – forgiveness.  It is much easier to hold onto a hurt than it is to let go.  Humility teaches us to think less of ourselves and more of other people. Therefore, forgiving someone shows that you have the ability to put the needs of someone who hurt you in front of your own. Forgiveness does not mean to act like the event never happened, it instead means that you choose not to let that person be in control of your emotions.

When we are in the wrong, a true apology has 3 parts.

  1. I am sorry.
  2. Please forgive me.
  3. What can I do to make it right?

Many times, we miss part 3.  This is where the true mark of a person with self-esteem shows.  By making it right, we show that we are willing to correct our behaviors and become self-aware of that weakness.
