8 Pillars of Self-Esteem Part 5 – Gratitude

Gratitude is the ability to be content with what you have and to be thankful for it.  This aspect of self-esteem flies directly in the face of advertising that tells you to get the newest phone, biggest car, best house, or most expensive clothes.  A person with high self-esteem shows a spirit of gratefulness for what they have, instead of constantly worrying about what they don’t have.  Thanksgiving should not be just a one-day event around a large meal, it needs to be a daily reminder of how blessed we are.

When a person is thankful for what they have, they begin to think of the needs of others around them.  This shifts the focus away from self and onto the world.  This creates a spirit of generosity, which is part 6 of the pillars of self-esteem.
